Community health promoters trained in screening protocols

On March 20, 2026, HACEP Kenya conducted comprehensive training for community health promoters on newborn sickle cell screening protocols. The training session built local capacity to deliver life-saving health services across the Lake Region.

The training brought together community health workers from various districts, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to identify and support families affected by sickle cell disease. Participants learned practical screening techniques and community engagement strategies.

Training curriculum

The comprehensive program covered:

  • Understanding sickle cell disease and its impact on communities
  • Newborn screening procedures and protocols
  • Early identification of symptoms and risk factors
  • Community education and awareness strategies
  • Referral systems and follow-up care coordination
  • Data collection and reporting methods

"Community health promoters are the frontline warriors in our fight against sickle cell disease. By empowering them with knowledge and skills, we're creating a sustainable network of care that reaches every family in need."

The training emphasized the importance of community-based approaches, recognizing that local health promoters understand their communities' unique challenges and can effectively communicate health messages in local languages and cultural contexts.

Hands-on learning experience

Participants engaged in practical exercises including:

  • Screening procedure demonstrations
  • Role-playing community education scenarios
  • Data recording and reporting practice
  • Peer support group facilitation
  • Advocacy and campaign planning

The training concluded with action planning sessions where participants developed community outreach strategies tailored to their local contexts. HACEP Kenya committed to providing ongoing mentorship and resources to support implementation.

Expected impact

With trained community health promoters in place, HACEP Kenya anticipates:

  • Increased screening coverage in remote areas
  • Improved community awareness of SCD
  • Better linkage to care services
  • Strengthened community health systems
  • Reduced stigma and improved support for affected families

This initiative represents a critical step toward comprehensive, community-driven healthcare delivery in the Lake Region.
